The Town of Killarney is buzzing with excitement this week with the announcement of the first full distance marathon to be held in the town on the 20th July 2013. With a half marathon and a 10K race on the same day this will be one date eagerly anticipated by all running enthusiasts. A fast downhill course with amazing scenery is certainly a combination that makes the Run Killarney Marathon a great day out.
The event has teamed up with Bee For Battens as this year’s charity partner. Tony Heffernan founder of the charity which helps those affected by a rare neuro-degenerative condition commented , ‘’we are delighted to be involved with the Run Killarney Marathon, we hope it will raise awareness of Batten's Disease and generate much needed funding through sponsorship. I am getting myself fit in the new year and hope to compete in the Half Marathon’’. Its a big ask to get from almost 19 stone to being able to run 13 milies in 2013, but I must replicate the effort made by others to raise funds for us.
The event secured a big win over the weekend when a brand synonymous with Killarney, The Gleneagle Hotel was announced as the title sponsor. The event will now be called Gleneagle Run Killarney Marathon and will start and finish in the Gleneagle complex which will guarantee a great atmosphere and superb facilities for all competitors.
Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, was on hand to launch the event in the Gleneagle hotel and stated that ‘’events like this do so much to improve the health and wellbeing of the individuals who take part and to compete any of the distances is a great achievement. I am looking forward to taking part myself and I hope to complete the 10K distance’’, FF Senator Mark Daly, Ind TD Michael Healy Ray & Radio Kerry Jerry O Sullivan will also complete the race, with some maintaining blogs while preparing for the event.
An information night will take place on the 8th of January at 7.30 in the Gleneagle Hotel where local running expert Brenda Doody from GC Fitness will be available to prepare a personalized training plan to get you ready. Complete beginners to seasoned runners are invited to the information night where Brenda will also be organizing the Run Killarney training group which will meet twice a week to get everyone motivated to go out and run.
With the success of last year’s 10K and Half Marathon selling out 6 weeks in advance and attracting over 1,500 competitors organisers believe the addition of the full marathon will ensure everyone has an experience in Killarney that they will never forget.
